What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that changes the external appearance of the nose. The bone and cartilage framework of the nose is reshaped and, where necessary, reduced, narrowed or supported. Because deviations inside the nose and airway problems can be addressed in the same operation, rhinoplasty is not only an aesthetic but also a functional operation.

Which Problems Can Be Corrected?

  • Nasal hump: A prominent bump visible in profile
  • Wide nose: Bone or cartilage structure that is wide relative to the face
  • Drooping or bulbous tip: A tip that looks droopy, wide or undefined
  • Crooked nose: Deviations present from birth or after trauma
  • Wide nostrils: Nostrils that look prominent and wide
  • Breathing problems: Obstruction caused by a deviated septum or enlarged turbinates

Who Is It Suitable For?

  • People whose nasal growth is complete (usually after age 16 for girls and 17–18 for boys)
  • Those unhappy with the appearance of their nose or their breathing
  • Those whose general health is suitable for surgery
  • Those with realistic expectations who want the change for themselves

Preparing for Surgery

During the examination, the outside and inside of the nose are examined, facial proportions are assessed and your expectations are discussed using photographs. The necessary tests are done before surgery. Blood thinners, certain herbal supplements and smoking should be stopped for the period your doctor recommends. It is advisable to have a companion with you on the day of surgery.

Step by Step

1

Week 1

The splint and any silicone splints are removed. Bruising and swelling around the eyes begin to subside.

2

Week 2

Most of the bruising fades; most patients return to work and social life.

3

Months 1 – 3

Swelling decreases significantly and the new shape of the nose begins to emerge.

4

Months 6 – 12

The last swelling in the tip resolves and the nose takes its permanent form.

A Surgeon’s View

A good rhinoplasty does not make the nose stand out on the face; it brings it into harmony with the rest of the face. Balancing the nose while preserving its structure, rather than simply making it smaller, secures both a natural look and comfortable breathing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rather than significant pain, there is a feeling of fullness and pressure in the nose. This period is usually managed comfortably with simple painkillers.

In most patients, soft silicone splints that allow breathing are used and removed within a few days. In some cases no packing is needed at all.

During the examination, the intended changes are discussed together using photographs. This gives an idea; however, because tissue structure and healing vary from person to person, the exact result cannot be guaranteed.

Light walking can begin in the first days. Usually 4–6 weeks are recommended before heavy sports, and longer for contact sports.

To allow the nasal bones to heal, it is recommended to wear glasses in a way that does not press on the nasal bridge for about 4–6 weeks.
