What Is a Thread Lift?

A thread lift is a non-surgical rejuvenation method in which absorbable medical threads such as PDO or PCL are placed under the skin with a fine cannula or needle. Threads with small barbs grip the sagging tissue and suspend it upward and backward. As the threads dissolve, new collagen forms around them, making the skin look firmer and more vibrant.

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

  • Outer tail of the brow and corner of the eye (almond-eye look)
  • Cheek and cheekbone area
  • Nasolabial (smile) lines and mouth corners
  • Jawline and double chin
  • Neck

Who Is It Suitable For?

It is suitable for people with mild to moderate sagging who do not want surgery or for whom surgery is still too early. It usually gives good results between the ages of 30 and 55. In patients with advanced sagging and excess skin, a thread lift will not meet expectations; in such cases surgical options such as a facelift are more appropriate.

It is not performed during pregnancy or in the presence of an active skin infection, uncontrolled chronic disease or a bleeding disorder.

Types of Threads

Lifting (barbed) threads: Grip and lift the tissue; used to correct sagging.

Smooth (mono) threads: Have no lifting effect; placed in a mesh pattern under the skin, they increase collagen production and improve skin quality.

In most patients, both types of thread are planned together according to need.

Risks

Swelling, mild bruising, tightness and tenderness when opening the mouth lasting a few days are expected after the procedure. Temporary dimpling or mild asymmetry may be seen in the skin; these usually resolve on their own within a few days to a few weeks. Rarely, a thread may be felt under the skin or an infection may develop. Correct planning and sterile conditions significantly reduce the risks.

Step by Step

1

Assessment

The degree of sagging, skin thickness and expectations are assessed; the thread type and direction of placement are planned.

2

Application

After local anesthesia, the threads are placed under the skin along the planned lines; the procedure takes 30–60 minutes.

3

First week

Swelling and tightness subside. During this period, avoid excessive facial movement, massage and firm pressure.

4

Months 1 – 3

Collagen forms around the threads, and skin firmness and quality continue to improve.

A Surgeon’s View

In the right patient, a thread lift provides an impressive refreshment without surgery; however, it does not replace a facelift. Rather than an exaggerated pulled look, we aim for a measured lift that suits the natural contours of the face.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because local anesthesia is used, no significant pain is felt during the procedure. There may be mild tightness and tenderness for the next few days.

The lifting effect is visible immediately after the procedure. The look settles once the swelling subsides, while the collagen effect continues to increase for 2–3 months.

No. The threads are completely dissolved by the body within 6–12 months; the collagen support they create remains.

Because the threads are inserted through needle entry points, no stitches are needed and no scars are left.

Yes. When the effect wears off, usually after 12–18 months, the procedure can safely be repeated.
