In Brief
During pregnancy, the two muscle bands of the front abdominal wall move apart to make room for the growing uterus. After childbirth this gap sometimes does not close. As a result, the abdomen looks protruding even after weight loss. Sit-ups and abdominal exercises do not close this gap; some exercises may even make it more noticeable. Bringing the muscles back together surgically is the most effective solution for a flat abdomen.
A full tummy tuck is performed for people with sagging and muscle separation both above and below the navel; the navel is repositioned.
A mini tummy tuck is preferred when sagging is limited to below the navel; the incision is shorter, the navel is not touched and recovery is faster.
When combined with liposuction of the waist and flanks, the waistline becomes much more defined.
Fluid collection at the surgical site, delayed wound healing, scar thickening and blood clots are known risks. Early mobilization, compression stockings and avoiding smoking reduce these risks.
First days
You walk slightly bent forward and lie with your back raised and knees bent.
Week 1
Any drains are removed and short walks are increased.
Weeks 2 – 3
Return to desk work; driving is possible.
Week 6 and after
The compression garment is stopped; abdominal exercises are resumed after 2–3 months.
A Surgeon’s View
Pregnancy is possible after a tummy tuck; however, pregnancy can stretch the muscles and skin again. Having the operation after completing your family plans is therefore the best choice.
