In Brief

  • The tail of the brow, the corner of the eye and the upper midface are lifted together.

What Is a Temporal Lift?

A temporal lift is a surgical method that repositions the upper facial tissues, which shift downward and inward with age, through small incisions at the temples. A drooping brow tail, sagging at the corner of the eye and more visible crow’s feet are the most common signs of aging in this area. With a temporal lift, the tissues are suspended upward and outward, removing the tired look and giving the eyes a more open, almond-shaped appearance.

Who Is It Suitable For?

It is ideal for people with a drooping outer brow, sagging at the corners of the eyes and a tired expression, but without sagging severe enough to require a full facelift. It is usually preferred between the ages of 35 and 55. In younger patients it can also be performed for aesthetic reasons to slightly lift the corner of the eye and achieve the look known as “almond eyes”.

In patients with significant cheek and neck sagging, a temporal lift alone may not be enough; in that case it is planned together with a facelift.

How Is It Performed?

Incisions of 2–3 cm are made at both temples, a few centimeters behind the hairline. Through these incisions, the superficial facial tissues are released from the firm connective tissue layer beneath. The tissues of the brow tail, eye corner and upper cheekbone are lifted in the planned direction and secured with permanent sutures. If excess skin needs to be removed, it is taken from within the scalp and the incisions are closed.

The procedure can be performed with endoscopic assistance; this keeps the incisions small and allows nerves and vessels to be seen directly and protected.

Temporal Lift vs. Thread Lift

Lifts performed with dissolvable threads are incision-free and have a short recovery, but their effect is usually limited to one or two years. A surgical temporal lift, by directly releasing and securing the tissues, gives a much more lasting and predictable result. Which method is suitable is determined during the examination based on the degree of sagging, skin quality and expectations.

Risks

Temporary swelling, bruising and a feeling of tightness at the temples are expected. Temporary numbness of the scalp, limited hair loss along the incision line and slight asymmetry may occur. Temporary weakness of the nerve branch that moves the forehead is rare and usually resolves on its own within a few weeks to a few months. In experienced hands and with correct planning, the risk of serious complications is low.

Step by Step

1

Assessment

Brow position, eye corner, cheekbone area and skin quality are assessed together; the desired look is discussed.

2

Planning

It is decided whether a temporal lift alone is needed or a combination with eyelid surgery or a facelift.

3

Surgery

The tissues are lifted and secured through small incisions at the temples; the procedure takes about 1–1.5 hours.

4

Aftercare

Swelling and bruising subside in the first week, stitches are removed within 7–10 days and you return to social life. The final result settles in 2–3 months.

A Surgeon’s View

A temporal lift is a powerful method that can rejuvenate the eyes without touching the eye area itself. Our aim is not a surprised or “pulled” expression but a rested look that is still your own. For this reason, the direction and amount of lift are planned individually for each patient.
