Surviving fat is permanent

In Brief

  • The patient’s own fat tissue is used instead of filler material.
  • Part of the injected fat is absorbed by the body; the part that survives is permanent.
  • Besides restoring volume, an improvement in skin quality may also be seen.
  • If needed, a second session can be planned a few months later.

What Is Fat Injection?

Fat injection (autologous fat transfer / lipofilling) is the harvesting of fat with fine cannulas from an area with excess fat, such as the abdomen, waist or inner thighs, and injecting it after special processing into areas of the face or body with volume loss or contour defects. Because the material used is the patient’s own tissue, it is compatible with the body and does not cause a foreign-body reaction.

Which Areas Can Be Treated?

On the face

  • Cheekbones and cheeks
  • Under-eye hollows and the eye area
  • Temple hollows
  • Nasolabial (smile) lines and mouth corners
  • Lips, chin and jawline
  • Depressions caused by acne or scars

On the body

  • Buttock and hip area – Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
  • Volume support and correction of asymmetry in the breasts
  • Age-related thinning and visible veins on the back of the hands
  • Irregularities and dents remaining after liposuction
  • Depressed scars after surgery or injury

Who Is It Suitable For?

  • Those with volume loss and hollowing in the face with age
  • Those who want to gain volume naturally in the buttocks, breasts or back of the hands
  • Those whose face looks thin and tired after rapid weight loss
  • Those who want a longer-lasting solution and prefer their own tissue to synthetic fillers
  • Patients who need volume support together with a facelift or eyelid surgery
  • Those in good general health with an area from which fat can be harvested

Ready-Made Filler or Fat Injection?

Ready-made (hyaluronic acid) fillers are applied quickly without surgery and dissolve over time; they are a good option for small corrections and for first-time filler patients. Fat injection stands out when more volume is needed and when a lasting result is desired. On the other hand, recovery takes longer because of the fat harvesting stage, and how much of the fat survives varies from person to person. Which method suits you is decided together during the examination.

Aftercare

  • Cold compresses in the first days help reduce swelling and bruising.
  • No massage or pressure should be applied to the injected area; for face and buttock treatments, avoid lying on that area for the first weeks.
  • Wearing a compression garment on the donor area for a short time may be recommended.
  • Smoking should be stopped, as it negatively affects fat survival.
  • Heavy exercise and saunas should be postponed for the period your doctor recommends.

Step by Step

1

Assessment

Areas with volume loss and the donor area are identified and marked.

2

Application

Under local anesthesia or sedation, fat is harvested with fine cannulas, purified and injected into the target area in small amounts, layer by layer.

3

Aftercare

There may be swelling and bruising for the first 1 – 2 weeks; most patients return to social life within 7 – 10 days.

4

Follow-up

The final result settles in about 3 – 6 months; an additional session is planned if needed.

A Surgeon’s View

Success in fat injection depends on injecting the fat not all at once in a dense mass, but in small amounts distributed across different layers. This makes it easier for the fat cells to receive nourishment and survive, and the result looks more natural.

Frequently Asked Questions

Part of the injected fat is absorbed in the first months. The fat cells that survive are permanent as living tissue; however, aging and weight changes continue to affect the treated area.

The survival rate varies by person, area and technique. For this reason, some patients may need a second session after a few months.

Because it is performed under local anesthesia or sedation, no pain is felt during the procedure. Tenderness afterward is usually controlled with simple painkillers.

Swelling and bruising vary from person to person, but most patients return to daily life and work within 7 – 10 days.

Because only a small amount is needed for the face, enough fat can usually be harvested even in thin people. For body treatments that require more fat, such as the buttocks or breasts, whether there is enough fat is assessed during the examination.
