In Brief
In the past, a facelift brought to mind tight faces that looked as if they had come out of a wind tunnel. The reason was that only the skin was pulled. Today, the support layer beneath the skin is repositioned, and the skin is laid over this new structure without tension. As a result, the face looks not pulled but as it did a few years earlier.
Uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes and active smoking may require postponing the operation.
Short-scar (mini) lift: A more limited procedure for early sagging.
Classic deep-layer (SMAS) lift: The most common method, in which the mid and lower face are lifted together with the muscle and connective tissue.
Deep plane lift: An approach in which the tissues are moved as a single unit, providing a stronger effect in the midface.
Neck lift: Tightening the neck muscles and, if needed, removing fat under the chin.
The incisions start within the hairline, follow the natural crease in front of the ear and end behind the ear. This placement allows the scars to become almost invisible over time.
First 3 days
Swelling and tightness are noticeable; you rest with your head elevated.
Days 7 – 10
Stitches are removed and bruising begins to fade.
Weeks 2 – 3
Return to social life; bruising can be covered with light makeup.
Months 3 – 6
The tissues soften completely and the natural look settles.
A Surgeon’s View
A facelift does not restore lost volume; it only repositions the tissues. That is why fat injection into hollow cheeks and temples in the same session makes the result much more youthful and natural.
