In Brief
The word reduction patients use most often is “lighter”. Not waking up with a stiff neck, no bra straps digging into the shoulders, no rashes under the breasts and being able to run comfortably are the most tangible results of the operation in daily life. That is why breast reduction is among the operations with the highest satisfaction rates.
Once breast development is complete, surgery can also be considered at a young age if the complaints are significant.
Scars are unavoidable in breast reduction. In medium-sized breasts, a “lollipop” scar consisting of a circle around the nipple and a vertical line may be enough. In very large and sagging breasts, a horizontal line in the breast crease is added, creating an “inverted T” shape. The scars look pink in the first months; within a year they fade and thin significantly. Most patients say that the scars come second to the comfort they have gained.
Breast imaging is performed before surgery, and the removed tissue is sent for pathological examination when necessary. Techniques that preserve the nipple’s connection to the underlying tissue aim to preserve sensation and the ability to breastfeed; however, no definite guarantee can be given on this.
Preparation
Breast imaging, blood tests and an anesthesia assessment are performed; smoking is stopped.
Surgery
Excess tissue is removed, the remaining tissue is shaped and lifted, and the nipple is moved to its new position.
First 2 weeks
A support bra is worn and light daily activities are possible.
Week 6 and after
Return to sports; as the breasts settle into shape, the scars begin to fade.
A Surgeon’s View
Bringing your weight close to your target before surgery makes the result longer-lasting. Significant weight gain after surgery can cause the breasts to grow again.

Temporary changes in sensation are common and usually resolve within months; permanent loss of sensation is rare.
This depends on the amount of tissue removed and body structure. A reduction of 2–3 cup sizes is usually targeted.
A support bra is essential for the first 6 weeks. After that you can wear any supportive bra you find comfortable.
