In Brief

  • The septum is the cartilage and bone wall that divides the nasal cavity in two.
  • A significant deviation blocks airflow; sprays provide only temporary relief.
  • The operation is performed inside the nose; the external appearance does not change.

A Problem We Get Used to Without Noticing

Many people with a deviated septum get used to breathing through one side for years and think it is normal. Sleeping with the mouth open at night, a dry mouth in the morning, frequent throat infections, snoring and unexplained fatigue during the day can all actually be the result of not getting enough air through the nose. The sentence patients say most often after surgery is: “I didn’t know you could breathe this easily.”

What Causes the Deviation?

A deviated septum can be present from birth, but it often develops as a result of small, unnoticed knocks in childhood. During growth, the cartilage can bend to one side. Nasal trauma in adulthood can also cause deviation.

When Is Treatment Needed?

  • Persistent obstruction on one or both sides
  • Frequently recurring sinusitis and postnasal drip
  • Snoring and poor sleep quality
  • Becoming dependent on nasal sprays
  • Recurrent nosebleeds

Mild deviations that cause no symptoms do not need treatment. The decision is made by evaluating the examination findings together with the complaints.

Considering It Together with Aesthetics

The deviation is sometimes reflected on the outside of the nose, making it look tilted to one side. In people with both breathing and appearance problems, the two procedures can be combined in the same operation. This means a single anesthesia and a single recovery. If the turbinates are enlarged, they can also be reduced in the same session.

Step by Step

1

Surgery

The lining inside the nose is lifted, the deviated part is straightened or removed, and the lining is laid back in place.

2

First days

There is a feeling of congestion due to the soft splints placed inside the nose.

3

Days 5 – 7

The splints are removed; breathing improves noticeably.

4

Months 1 – 3

Healing inside the nose is completed; regular rinsing reduces crusting.

A Surgeon’s View

If you have been using a nasal spray for a long time, be sure to mention it during the examination. Long-term use of some sprays causes swelling of the turbinates and can increase congestion.

Frequently Asked Questions

When performed alone, the external appearance does not change. If a change in shape is desired, it should be planned together with aesthetic correction.

No such change is expected when the support that holds up the tip is preserved.

Snoring caused by nasal obstruction decreases significantly. If there are other causes of snoring, further evaluation may be needed.

Thanks to the soft, hollow splints used today, the process is much more comfortable than with old-style packing.
