Bruising

Minimal

In Brief

  • Only the tip cartilages are shaped, without touching the bones.
  • Bruising is minimal; return to social life is faster.
  • If there is a problem with the nasal bridge, correcting the tip alone may give an unbalanced result.

Why Is the Nose Tip So Important?

The nose tip is one of the first points the eye catches when looking at a face. A slightly upturned, well-defined tip adds vitality to the face; a drooping or wide tip can make the face look heavier and older than it is. That is why sometimes a change of just a few millimeters at the tip is enough to change the whole facial expression.

Which Problems Can Be Corrected?

  • Drooping tip: A tip that drops even further when smiling
  • Wide or bulbous tip: A rounded look caused by overly wide cartilages
  • Undefined tip: Contours that cannot be seen because of thick skin or weak cartilage
  • Asymmetric tip: Cases where the two sides look different
  • Retracted columella: The bridge between the nostrils is not visible in profile

What It Doesn’t Do

Tip surgery does not remove a hump, narrow wide bones or straighten a crooked bridge. If these problems are also present, correcting only the tip can make one part of the nose look disconnected from the rest. That is why the whole nose is evaluated during the examination and the scope is widened if necessary.

How Is the Operation Performed?

The tip cartilages are narrowed and redirected with special suture techniques and, if needed, strengthened with small supports taken from the nose’s own cartilage. Because the bones are not touched, bruising around the eyes is usually not seen and packing is often not needed.

Step by Step

1

Week 1

The small tape on the nose is removed. Apart from mild swelling, there is no noticeable sign.

2

Week 2

Returning to work and social life is easily possible.

3

Months 1 – 3

Firmness at the tip decreases and the shape becomes more defined.

4

Months 6 – 12

The tip softens and takes its permanent form.

A Surgeon’s View

The tip is the part of the nose that heals last. In the first months it is normal for the tip to look slightly more upturned or firmer than expected; patience is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

When the tip support is properly strengthened, the drop when smiling decreases significantly. If needed, the effect of the muscle that pulls the tip down is also reduced.

Yes, the new shape given to the cartilages is permanent. As with the whole face, small changes may occur with aging.

For mild drooping, filler and small muscle-relaxant treatments offer a temporary solution; for significant problems, surgery gives a more lasting result.

Yes, wide nostrils can be reduced in the same session.
